We cannot change anything unless we accept it. Condemnation does not liberate; it oppresses – Carl Gustav Jung
Over the years, I have worked with thousands of leaders, managers, professionals, teams and organisations. Regardless of industry, geography or level of responsibility, I have observed that the challenges people face tend to fall into three broad categories.
Some challenges are about understanding ourselves.
Some are about understanding and leading others.
And some are about understanding and transforming the organisations within which we work.
These three perspectives form the foundation of what I call Purposeful Leadership.
They are:
Purposeful Self Leadership
Purposeful People Leadership
Purposeful Organisational Leadership
Over the years, I have developed, adapted and curated a range of assessments to help individuals and organisations gain insights across these three perspectives. This article introduces the framework that connects them all.
Perspective One: Purposeful Self Leadership
The first perspective focuses on the person in the mirror.
Too often, leadership development begins by focusing on others. Yet meaningful leadership begins with self-awareness. Our beliefs, emotions, motivations, values and behaviours influence every decision we make and every relationship we build.
Within this perspective are assessments such as the Locus of Control Assessment, EQ-IQ Dynamics Assessment, Natural Abilities Assessment and Personality Types Assessment.
Each provides a different lens through which individuals can better understand themselves.
At its heart, this perspective seeks to answer a simple but profound question:
Who am I, and how can I become the best version of myself?
Perspective Two: Purposeful People Leadership
Leadership is expressed through relationships.
As leaders, parents, teachers, colleagues and friends, we constantly influence and are influenced by others. Our ability to communicate, build trust, resolve differences, develop people and navigate complexity significantly impacts our effectiveness.
This perspective includes tools such as the Leadership Styles Assessment, Leadership Complexities Assessment, Interaction Personalities Assessment and the soon-to-be-launched Leadership Profile Assessment.
These assessments help us better understand how we lead, how we relate to others and how we can bring out the best in the people around us.
The central question here is:
How can I help others flourish?
Perspective Three: Purposeful Organisational Leadership
The third perspective expands our focus from individuals and relationships to the systems within which people operate.
Organisations possess cultures, structures, processes and patterns of behaviour that influence results. Even highly capable individuals often struggle when organisational systems are unhealthy.
This perspective includes the High-Performing Teams Assessment, Customer Service Review, and two assessments currently under development: the Human Performance Index and the Flourishing Quotient.
These tools help leaders examine organisational effectiveness, customer experience, team performance and the broader conditions that enable sustainable success.
The central question becomes:
How do we create organisations where both performance and people flourish?
Why These Three Perspectives Matter
Although these perspectives are presented separately, they are deeply interconnected.
Strong organisations require effective people leadership.
Effective people leadership requires strong self-leadership.
And strong self-leadership begins with self-awareness.
When one perspective is ignored, the others are affected.
Leaders who understand themselves but cannot develop others often struggle to create impact.
Leaders who develop people well but fail to build effective organisations often create dependency rather than sustainability.
Organisations that focus exclusively on systems and performance while neglecting people often achieve short-term results but undermine long-term flourishing.
Purposeful Leadership requires attention to all three.
It requires developing self, people, and organisations in an integrated way.
The Journey Ahead
This article marks the beginning of a new series.
Over the coming months, I will explore each assessment individually, examining what it measures, why it matters and how its insights can support purposeful growth.
I hope that these articles will help readers move beyond simply gaining knowledge towards developing greater awareness, wisdom and intentionality.
If you would like to begin your own journey of discovery, I invite you to visit http://www.ranjandesilva.com/assessment and explore any of the assessments that interest you. As part of our commitment to developing purposeful leaders and organisations, we make these assessments available free of charge. It is our small contribution towards helping individuals better understand themselves, strengthen their relationships and create organisations that contribute to the flourishing of life.
Because when we understand ourselves better, we lead others better.
When we lead others better, organisations flourish.
And when organisations flourish, communities and societies flourish.
Ultimately, that is what Purposeful Leadership is all about.
Reflection
Which perspective currently deserves the greatest attention in your life?
Yourself?
The people you lead and influence?
Or the organisation you are helping to shape?
Perhaps purposeful growth begins with understanding where you are before deciding where you wish to go.
